Exploring Culture

As part of our personal mapping exercise, we found out that culture is an important influence on our lives.

We’re going to start exploring the different aspects of our own cultures in order to present them to each other.

Today, I’d like you to begin thinking about culture by answering these questions as a comment to this post.

  1. What is culture? How does it belong to you?
  2. Which local or national traditions have you heard of?
  3. What is special, beautiful or important about them?
  4. If people your age came to visit, what local or national traditions would you tell them about?
  5. Find an image that you think describes ‘culture’ and paste the link to it in your response.

Follow these instructions for how to comment.

There’s tons of traditions. I’m italian and this is what my family does. Italians are catholic and we attend chruch every sunday and all the celebrated days like Madonna Day (Madonna is the virgin mary in italian) We have sunday suppers, in my case it’s saturday breakfast. We celebrate italian week in Montreal every year. At italian weddings, it’s tradition to do the Tarantella dance. Wine is a must during our meals, There’s always meat and salad in the meals. A lot of italians make their own wines. My grandfather, uncle and father make their own wine every year. There’s lots more… WE HAVE THE MAFIA :D

1. My culture is my origins, my ancestors, our family traditions, the country that i’m from, the province that i’m from, my language, my province’s story, my country’s story, my beliefs, my religion. My culture is french, my origins are french (from France) so that’s part of my culture, the many wars that happened in Quebec to keep the french language in power are parts of my culture. We don’t really have tradition in my family excepted for the fact that we eat pizza for breakfast…But that’s not a part of my culture i guess…I know that my ancestors were leaving during the year to go in the forest, it was only the guys though…I don’t know why, my dad never did that! My ancestors were catholic, but i’m not. myeaa….

What is culture? How does it belong to you?
Culture is something that a lot of people have in common. Culture can mean where you are from, or what you believe in.
A lot of people have lots of different cultures, some don’t have any at all. Most people take it seriously and appreciate and like it a lot, while others have it in their outer circle of their systems!

Which local or national traditions have you heard of?
pow wows in town, a lot of native people get together and do things to represent tradition and their culture.
there is a st.patrick day parade every year in montreal
i love it, just to go there and everyone is dressed up and the streets are packed with people every where you look. People who are irish, people who arent irish just go and enjoy the partayy!

What is special, beautiful or important about them?
everyone coming together to represent culture, and being proud to be who you are and where you are from.

If people your age came to visit, what local or national traditions would you tell them about?
st.paddys!!!
thats a definate one, only because it is so fun to go to.
its a giant party. everyone from chateauguay always meet up at the same place every year at the parade, i guess you can say thats a tradition too!!!

Find an image that you think describes ‘culture’ and paste the link to it in your response.

i think it is possible
i dont have any!
or maybe i do i just dont celebrate it or reconize it.
to me its not as important as it is to other people
that might be the reason i dont think i have any becuase my family doesnt really talk about it or take time to reconize it

1. Culture is your origins, where you come from, your traditions, your way of life, your family and ancestor, your country and your beliefs. My culture is French, we celebrate Christmas on Christmas eve and open present at night instead of opening them on Christmas morning. Christmas would be one of the only traditions that we kept in our family. My origins is French from France, I also have Irish and Scottish origins. My ancestor were catholic.

1)culture is your origins..for example where you come from, your beliefs, family, ancestry.I am native-american My beliefs are that a great spirt created the earth and that the earth doesnt belong to us ,we belong to the earth.i attend the local kahnawake pow-wow’s.I speak mohawk, and go to the longhouse when i can.The pow-wow is a tradional event in the native culture..it’s when the natives invite people and dance and sell crafts..also its to thank the creater for everything we have.I would tell people about the pow-wow because its a nice event to experience.

1. A culture is someones background, everyone has a different culture because you take after your parents and what they are.

2. Some traditions that ive heard of is usually get together and eating a lot of food. Italian names, both first names and last names, follow certain conventions. Baby names oftentimes originate from a relative,Each region of Italy has a distinct cuisine and traditional dish incorporating fresh ingredients and local products.

3. I dont really know whats special or beautiful about them, were just different than anyone elses culture. Mainly, we eat alot.

4. Bascially i would thell them that we eat alot, and that are names usually generate peoples family name back in the day.

1. What is culture? How does it belong to you?
culture is whats been passed down from generation to generation its something thats in your blood, its a way of life and differnt beliefs.

2. Which local or national traditions have you heard of?
A freanch tradition that alot of freanch people do is that on Xmass they open there gifts at midnight.
where also the only place in cannada that celabrates the anniversary of Quebec.

3. What is special, beautiful or important about them?
For example, the 100th year anniversary of Quebec city, this is special to quebecqois because it’s amazing to see our history and how far we’ve come. No other province in Quebec celebrates the fact that they;ve been around for 100 years like we did.

4.If people your age came to visit, what local or national traditions would you tell them about?
I would tell them about

If we race a car on a race track, this is not culture… This is call car racing.

Having breakfast at 5pm is called a dinner, not culture.

Brushing your teeth before having orange juice makes the orange juice taste bad. This is not even related to culture.

So, my point is that culture is something else than what was mentioned above.

[Reply]

Tracy Reply:

Culture is about many things. Culture can be about how we were brought up and the traditions surrounding important events in our lives, it can be about what a society has determined is of good taste, and it is also, simply put, ‘the way we do things around here’.

2.Which local or national traditions have you heard of? Well the ones that ive heard of would definitly be St. Patricks day. St.Patricks day is a very big celebration that is a very common tradition all over north america and especialy in Ireland. Another one would have to be Thankgiving thats a pretty popular one as well. Christmas is a definite tradition and last but not least it would have to be St.Jean-Babtiste day celebrated by mostly everone in Quecbec.

3.What is special, beautiful or important about them? Well for St.Patricks Day is that he was a saint that the irish catholic believed in and it turned out to be a special day in his dedecation. For Thanksgivng the special thing is that people are giving thanks for the gift of thanks and everyone normally celebrates it by having a big thanksgiving feast. For Christmas the special thing about is that it represents Jesus Christ’s birthday and people wanted to honor is birthday by giving people gifts and celebrating a nice Christmas dinner. For St-Jean Babtiste day the special thing about it is that St-Jean Babtiste was a saint of sepratism he was the one who helped bring the idea about so people mostly french celebrate this persons name by naming a holiday after him.

4.If people your age came to visit, what local or national traditions would you tell them about? Well if i had to choose I would choose to tell all of them to the newcomers because telling them about all these holidays will make them no more about the countrys cultures and ideas and it will make them feel good about themselves and it will make them feel like there part of our society.

something beautiful about irish people and thier culture is how theyve gone throught so much and yet are still one of the kindest nationalities ive ever seen. irish people are very hard working, irish people immigrated to montreal and were the controlling population of some small distritcs like point st charles, they were the hardest workers there.

1. Culture is something everyone most likely has. It could mean something different to everyone. Not everyone does the same things, they all have their own tradition. Some people don’t even do anything for their culture, and some don’t even have a culture.
2. St.pattys parade, Christmas parade, pow wow in Kahawake, and many more.
3. Everyone gets together to celebrate something speacial.
4. To be honest i really don’t know, there’s probably a few good ones to tell them about, like st.pattys the pow wow, i haven’t been to the pow wow though but apparently it’s fun times.

I’m noticing a few people write that either they don’t have a culture or that it is possible to not have a culture. Consider this:

“Culture rules virtually every aspect of your life and like most people, you are completely unaware of this. If asked, you would likely define culture as music, literature, visual arts, architecture or language, and you wouldn’t be wrong. But you wouldn’t be entirely right either. In effect, the things produced by a culture which we perceive with our five senses are simply manifestations of the deeper meaning of culture – what we do, think and feel.

from The Centre for Intercultural Learning (Canada).

If a deeper meaning of culture is what we do, think, and feel, can we say that it is possible for someone to NOT have a culture?

[Reply]

chelsea Reply:

I think everyone has a culture because they have to be born into something, like i dont do anything for my culture but im still half greek. So i dont see how some one can not have a culture just because they dont do anything for it or celebrate it, its still there culture.
